On 12 June, the Architects Council of Europe (ACE) and the European Region of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA Europe) have sent an open letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and to the Belgian presidency of the Council of the European Union asking them to appeal to the Member States of Belgium, Finland, Austria, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands and Poland to vote in favor of the first Europe-wide Nature Restoration Law and to give up their blocking minority - in the interests of ecosystems and in the interests of Europe.
The Architects Council of Europe (ACE) and the European Region of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA Europe) are deeply concerned about the blocking minority position of certain EU Member States towards the EU Nature Restoration Law.
The ACE and IFLA Europe, which represent the Architects and Landscape Architects across Europe, are partners of the New European Bauhaus, and are calling for a consistent law to restore nature.
The Nature Recovery Law is acknowledging the importance of restoration of our natural systems and the need to secure the conservation, development, and management of our landscapes to ensure climate resilience, as an extension of the European Green Deal or the new European Bauhaus Declaration. This law is an essential contribution to achieving the climate targets we have set ourselves and provides important guidelines for our professions.
This joint letter underscores the urgent need to adopt the EU Nature Restoration Law to safeguard our environment and future generations.
"As agents of change, architects stand ready to support this critical legislation, essential for achieving climate resilience and ecological preservation across Europe. As central in our Manifesto for the European Elections 2024, ACE is fully committed to addressing the global climate and biodiversity emergencies. We therefore urge the blocking minority to reconsider their position in the interest of ecosystems and Europe" stated Ruth Schagemann, ACE President.
"Landscape Architects fully endorses the Nature Recovery Law and points out the need to raising awareness through innovative and attractive solutions, ensuring that nature and ecosystems benefits are well communicated to society. It is important to promote nature, the quality of landscape planning, delivery, and management to provide nature-based solutions in climate change mitigation and adaptation and ensure the restoration of a sustainable balance for an improved quality of life of all species" highlighted Katerina Gkoltsiou, IFLA EUROPE President.
