ACE-BAK events during the 2017 EUSEW: "Architecture: Towards a Step Change in Building Performance"

In the framework of the EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW), the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) and the Federal Chamber of German Architects (BAK) organised two public events on 22 June on the theme “Architecture: Towards a Step Change in Building Performance".

In the context of the on-going revision of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), the objective was to share feedback from architectural projects that have successfully overcome the challenges of achieving healthy, comfortable and productive environments at measurably low energy and resource consumption. Both events have enabled to debate and shed light on the architectural determinants of building performance, the role of architecture in creating a step-change in the uptake of energy efficiency measures and the imperative to consider building performance in a broader and more holistic perspective.

The first event was a Panel Discussion at the Résidence Palace, with a keynote speech by Ms Anne Speicher (Baumschlager Eberle Architekten), who presented the Office Building 2226 – a passiv building in Lustenau (Switzerland) designed to guarantee continuous comfortable temperatures, all without heating, cooling or mechanical ventilation.

In the afternoon, a Workshop took place at the Architects’ House. Following a presentation of the Clean Energy Package by a representative from DG Energy, several architects and experts gave presentations on the architectural determinants of building performance, the importance of the validation of the operational performance of building, the embodied energy, the life cycle assessment, the value of design and innovative financing solutions for the renovation of the building stock.
