Advancing Affordable and Quality Housing in Europe: A Shared Commitment

On 2 June, the Architects Council of Europe (ACE) and the members of the European Housing (EHF) met Matthew Baldwin, Head of the EC Housing Task Force, to discuss solutions to the housing crisis that affects EU countries.

Matthew Baldwin outlined the core mission and operational focus of the Housing Task Force, which is working to generate tangible measures and policy proposals to address the housing affordability crisis throughout Europe. In his remarks, he shared updates on several initiatives currently in progress. Among them is a call for evidence, open through 4 June, and the formation of a Housing Advisory Board — a temporary panel of up to 15 independent experts — established to provide impartial advice in support of the forthcoming Affordable Housing Plan.

He also pointed to the next steps in the process, including a series of public consultations set to run from late June through late October 2025. These will explore a range of themes, with construction as one of the focal areas. Additionally, expert workshops focused on specific topics are planned for autumn 2025.

ACE reaffirmed the central role of the architectural profession in delivering sustainable, quality and affordable homes. Architects are key drivers in ensuring that housing meets social, environmental, and economic goals, contributing to the EU’s broader housing, social, and climate objectives.

Together with other EHF members, ACE stands ready to support the European Commission’s initiatives and contribute to the development of the EU Affordable Housing Plan.
