With the support of the Creative Europe programme of the European Union, the Architects' Council of Europe released a new publication 'A.I.: Architects for Innovative Research'. This new report presents the conclusions & guidelines of ACE's A.I. programme, which aims to explore and integrate innovative research into the field of architecture.

“In 2022, - conscious of the great creative potential and the responsibility that the use of Artificial Intelligence entails - ACE  initiated an ongoing activity of knowledge dissemination and promotion of A.I.  in architecture, believing this revolutionary tool to be a great opportunity for architects and their role in society” stated Diego Zoppi, ACE Executive Board Member.

The ACE A.I. programme was developed by its Practice Committee, whose members have been actively engaged in studying A.I. for the past years, curating a conference entitled 'Architects for Innovation' in 2022. In 2023, ACE launched the second part of the A.I. programme - a call for research. The aim of the research  was to provide an in-depth overview of current practices involving digital technology from different angles and to open up discussion on future developments, threads and opportunities.

In this publication, you will find an overview of the applications received and a focus on the 3 research projects selected:

  • Neural correlates of object and spatial visual cognitive styles. Psychological and electroencephalographic assessment by Linda Buondonno and Gaia Leandri (Italy);
  • A participatory planning program for the youth by UrbanistAI (Finland);
  • 'AI Successive Palimpsest Masterplan' by Evolutionary Laboratory for Architecture (Tchequia).
