The Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) today warmly welcomes the European Council’s adoption of the historic Nature Restoration Law. This law marks an important milestone in the EU’s commitment to enhancing biodiversity, mitigating climate change, and promoting sustainable land and water use. 

It’s a key element of the EU Biodiversity Strategy, which calls for binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems, in particular those with the most potential to capture and store carbon and to prevent and reduce the impact of natural disasters.  

“This law comes at a critical time when urgent action is needed to tackle the global climate and biodiversity emergencies. It’s an essential contribution to achieving the climate targets we have set ourselves and provides important guidelines for the architectural profession. Thanks to these clear guidelines, European architects can provide an effective response to the ecological preservation of habitats, the stabilisation of our ecosystems and support the common objective of making Europe climate neutral by 2050″ stated Ruth Schagemann, ACE President  

On 12 June 2024, the Architects Council of Europe (ACE) and the European Region of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA Europe) sent an open letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and to the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, asking them to appeal to the Member States of Belgium, Finland, Austria, Italy, Sweden, the Netherlands and Poland to vote in favour of the first Europe-wide Nature Restoration Law and to give up their blocking minority – in the interests of ecosystems and in the interests of Europe.
