Building Together: ACE x AIA Collaboration

Last week’s meeting between the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) highlighted the importance of international collaboration in addressing the key challenges shaping our built environment.

Discussions focused on shared priorities, including access to affordable, high-quality housing and the role of public procurement. The exchange also covered a wide range of topics such as the New European Bauhaus, urban planning, the increasing use of off-site fabrication, the EU–USA Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA), disaster resilience, and the protection of cultural heritage. Particular attention was given to supporting young architects and strengthening the global visibility of the profession.

Climate action, sustainable design frameworks, and the growing impact of artificial intelligence were also central to the conversation.

A clear message emerged: many of the challenges faced in Europe and the United States are shared. This common ground creates a strong foundation for cooperation. By exchanging good practices, aligning priorities, and working collectively, both organisations can help accelerate progress and deliver better outcomes for societies.

This meeting marks not an endpoint, but a starting point. ACE and AIA are committed to continuing this dialogue and turning it into concrete action, including future engagement at the UIA World Congress of Architects 2026 in Barcelona.

ACE extends its thanks to AIA President Illya Azaroff and all AIA colleagues for a constructive, forward-looking exchange.
