In Sweden, where 10,000 workers retire from the industry each year, 50% of construction companies report difficulty finding skilled workers and six in ten have declined business due to shortages, according to the Swedish Construction Federation (Byggf\u00f6retagen).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attracting more women to construction is not only a matter of equality: it is essential for ensuring the sector\u2019s future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/ace-cae.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Screenshot-2026-09-16-at-11.27.45.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was one of the central messages from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/build-up.ec.europa.eu\/en\/skills\/bus-united\"><strong>BUSUnited<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<strong>CoP 7 European Synergies<\/strong>&nbsp;webinar, organised by the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ace-cae.eu\/\">Architects Council of Europe (ACE)<\/a>&nbsp;on 16 September, as part of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/skills-week\">European Skills &amp; VET Week<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<h2 id=\"h-a-changing-sector-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A changing sector&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experiences shared by organisations from across Europe have highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to women\u2019s participation in the construction sector in order to retain this untapped workforce.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent changes in construction methods have widened the opportunities for women. Emerging roles, such as 3D construction printing operators or virtual site designers, have reduced the reliance on physical strength in favour of precision and coordination. However, stereotypes and lack of representation remain major obstacles for women.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A survey conducted by the project Construct Her Future (CoHER) indicates that 85% of young women interested in a career in construction say societal norms and biases are a major barrier to pursuing their aspirations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/employment-social-affairs.ec.europa.eu\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/embed_large\/public\/2026-09\/Skills%20that%20build%20Europe.%20Vocational%20education%20powers%20our%20future.%20%283%29.png?itok=S5b2zy7k\" alt=\"The image shows two print screens with participants from the event and the data: 85% of women interested in a career in construction is blocked by societal norms or bias.\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.415506958250497;width:712px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Societal norms or bias remain major barriers for women to pursue careers in the construction sector.Cedefop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-breaking-old-perceptions-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breaking old perceptions&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Participants in the webinar noted that women need to see themselves represented across the industry, not only in traditionally female-associated roles but as carpenters, engineers, site supervisors, business owners and leaders.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can\u2019t be what you can\u2019t see. Narrative shapes identity. And construction on screen is still typically masculine, dangerous, manual, and rarely inclusive&#8221;, stressed Oksana Koshman, from Irish innovation, education and R&amp;D centre Future Cast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initiatives like the Construction Woman of the Year award, organised by Byggf\u00f6retagen, and the Eramus+ project European Women Empowered in Construction (WEC) are actively elevating female role models.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-looking-at-the-whole-journey-nbsp\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Looking at the whole journey&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attracting women into training or entry-level roles is only one part of the picture.
