Decarbonizing Architecture: Addressing Climate and Housing Challenges in Europe

European cities are facing unprecedented challenges. Among them, the climate crisis and the housing crisis are the most urgent, profoundly affecting the way we live, the quality of our built environment, and public health.

Architecture has a key role to play in reducing Europe’s carbon footprint and supporting a just and effective energy transition. In this context, the Decarbonizing Architecture project was promoted by the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya (COAC) and the Agrupació AuS Arquitectura i Sostenibilitat, in collaboration with the Consejo Superior de los Colegios de Arquitectos de España (CSCAE) and the Architects’ Council of Europe (ACE-CAE).

The initiative aims to support architects and policymakers by fostering knowledge exchange, showcasing good practices, and advancing tools and strategies that contribute to the decarbonisation of the built environment.

In 2024, the Decarbonisation Conference held in Barcelona brought together more than 350 participants. With contributions from 30 national and international experts, the conference explored inspiring visions, regulatory developments—including the EPBD, EU Taxonomy and LEVEL(S)—as well as innovation, materials, renovation strategies, and the role of architectural quality in achieving climate objectives. The event demonstrated that coordinated action and high-quality architecture are essential to addressing climate and housing challenges effectively.

All conference sessions are now available online. Additional resources related to the Decarbonizing Architecture project can be found on the COAC website:
